Week 3 Post 3
The story of Eriphyle is one that leaves many things up for interpretation. The lack of intellect her character was given does a disservice to the story. I think her story likely does not have a big effect on people because it is not well known. Painting women in this way is not uncommon in mythology. This story has made me think more critically about the way women are written in myth.
I wonder if the stories are created intentionally to belittle women or if the belittling is just a biproduct of already ingrained misogyny. So often women are blamed, looked down on or painted as the monster. Because myths are bases for fundamental and cultural belief, these factors are ever-present in society.
Why do you think painting women in this way is not uncommon in mythology?
