Week 2 Post 3
With the information I've been reading, I have been trying to gather my thoughts on the concept of women as villainous characters in mythology. I am debating on either it following a sexist trend and showing centuries worth of discrimination toward women, or being a sort of lesson by false example. I think it is definitely more likely that these stories follow countless before and ahead of them that view women as less than men. Almost every myth can be tied to a real world situation. They are also good at putting things in perspective. Many people overlook or blame female (or any gender) victims of rape. But it would be easy to see in Medusa's case that her curse was wrongfully given to her and that she was the real victim in this scenario.
I would like for my coursera course to start digging deeper into analysis of these type of stories. I would enjoy hearing more stories from different perspectives like this. I would like to know if other types of mythology have similar characters/stories as to those listed in my first Post. If there is one story like the background of Medusa, I'm sure there are many and I plan to find out and analyze these differences and similarities.
